Drawing upon the experience of the creation of the Swiss ecoinvent database, the challenges and success factors for building up a national database will be outlined. The different applications, driving forces and possible business models will be described. National data collection initiatives play a pivotal role in the current efforts of ecoinvent to create a consistent International database. The opportunities for simplifying the creation and maintenance of national databases by combining global technology descriptions with national difference files and supply-use data will be described."

To quantify impacts within a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a product or service, characterization factors are applied in the impact phase. Characterization factors for ecotoxicity quantify the effects of a chemical on the environment caused by its emission. They consist of a fate part, addressing the steady-state concentration change in a compartment due to an environmental emission change, and an effect part, addressing the affected fraction of species due to the concentration change. The fate part is generally determined by applying a multimedia fate and exposure model that calculates steady-state concentrations in various environmental compartments from chemical emissions into the environment. The effect part is commonly derived from toxicity data based on laboratory experiments.
One of the problems that exist with the quantification of characterization factors within modeling approaches is that there can be a large uncertainty attached to the characterization factors due to uncertain input data, and due to model choices and simplifications. This might be a reason for LCA practitioners not to include ecotoxicity in their LCA. Therefore it is important to give LCA practitioners a good insight in uncertainties to help them make carefully thought-out decisions.
Parameter uncertainty is present as various input parameters are not exactly known and even have to be assumed in some cases as measured data are not available. A parameter uncertainty analysis was performed on the freshwater ecotoxicological characterization factors of a number of pesticides by applying uncertainty distributions to the physical-chemical and toxicity input data. The fate factors of the pesticides show an uncertainty range of a factor of 1.4 to less than 3 orders of magnitude. The uncertainty in the effect factor ranged from a factor of 1.8 to 4 orders of magnitude. Uncertainty in the effect depended to a large extent on the number of species toxicity tests that were available for the pesticide, and whether the toxic mode of action (TMoA) of the pesticide was known. If the TMoA was unknown, an uncertainty range of at least 3.5 orders of magnitude was observed, while a low number of test species (3-4) resulted in an uncertainty of an order of magnitude.
Assumptions and simplifications in the choice of model can cause uncertainty as well. One model assumption included in the calculation of current characterization factors is that degradation of chemicals yields harmless products. In reality, however, transformation yields daughter products, which may harm the environment as well. To see for the model uncertainty attached to the exclusion of transformation products (TPs), freshwater ecotoxicity characterization factors of the pesticides including their TPs and the parameter uncertainty attached to the factors were calculated. Including transformation products can increase characterization factors up to 12 orders of magnitude. However, the increase is very much liable to parameter uncertainty. This parameter uncertainty is mainly caused by a lack of reliable toxicity test data for the TPs.

L’Analyse de Cycle de Vie (ACV) est une méthode permettant d’évaluer et de comparer les performances environnementales des produits, des services ou des procédés en considérant chacune des phases du cycle de vie (de l’extraction des matières premières à l’élimination des déchets). Après avoir quantifié les ressources consommées et les émissions polluantes de chacun des procédés du cycle de vie, ces flux sont convertis en un ensemble d’indicateurs environnementaux (changements climatiques, santé humaine, qualité de l’écosystème, etc.).

Bien que l’ACV tende à s’imposer comme la méthode de référence pour l’évaluation de la performance environnementale des produits, des limites méthodologiques demeurent. Ainsi, l’utilisation de la ressource eau n’est pas prise en compte de manière adaptée. Les différents types de ressources (eau de surface, eau souterraine, etc.), la qualité de l’eau, mais également les types d’utilisation (usage évaporatif, usage dégradatif etc.) ne sont pas distingués. De plus, aucun des indicateurs d’impact environnemental utilisé en ACV ne prend en compte les effets de l’utilisation de l’eau. Cette ressource se trouve pourtant aujourd’hui au centre des préoccupations environnementales. Il est donc nécessaire d’améliorer l’ACV afin que cette méthode permette d’évaluer les produits vis-à-vis de la ressource eau.

L’objectif de cette présentation est de proposer un cadre d’étude permettant de lier l’utilisation de la ressource eau à des indicateurs d’impacts ACV. Des recommandations sur les données à collecter (flux d’eau) sont présentées. Trois chaînes cause/effets sont proposées : l’utilisation de la ressource eau affecte les différents usages humains (eau potable, agriculture, etc.), la qualité des écosystèmes, et les ressources naturelles.
Ce cadre d’étude est une base pour à terme évaluer de manière quantitative les impacts de l’utilisation de la ressource eau.

En plus d’être une composante dynamique et partie intégrante de l’écosystème naturel, le sol est une ressource essentielle pour plusieurs types d’aménagement et d’activités économiques, tels que l’agriculture, l’infrastructure, les sites miniers, etc. Dans le but de garantir sa disponibilité pour les générations futures, son utilisation durable requiert une prise de décision éclairée et justifiée au moyen d’une méthode d’évaluation des impacts environnementaux exhaustive, telle que l’évaluation des impacts en Analyse du Cycle de Vie (ACV). Toutefois, malgré leurs contributions aux dommages sur la qualité de l’environnement, les impacts potentiels associés à l’utilisation des terres ne sont pas comptabilisés adéquatement et ne sont pris en compte que de manière sommaire par les méthodes d’évaluation actuelles. Ces dernières sont souvent trop sélectives au niveau des voies d’impact à modéliser ou trop restrictives par rapport à la couverture spatiale.
Cette présentation a donc pour objectif de présenter un cadre méthodologique permettant de quantifier les impacts potentiels relié à l’utilisation des terres axé sur l’évaluation des impacts sur la biodiversité et sur les services fournis par l’écosystème naturel. Le cadre d’analyse propose également une série d’indicateurs quantitatifs et différenciés sur le plan spatial. Ce projet s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une collaboration internationale qui vise à harmoniser les pratiques et à fournir une méthode d’évaluation opérationnelle des impacts de l’utilisation des terres en ACV.
Plus particulièrement, cette étude prend en compte les processus environnementaux de la transformation et de l’occupation dans la caractérisation des effets. L’élaboration d’une chaîne de cause à effet à permis d’identifier la nature des impacts potentiels ainsi que les aires de protection d’intérêt, soit celles possédant une valeur intrinsèque ou sociétale (fonctionnelle) méritant d’être sauvegardées. Ainsi, les effets induits par l’utilisation d’un lopin de terre sont modélisés en se basant sur la qualité écologique du sol et le concept de sa multifonctionnalité, c'est-à-dire sa capacité à fournir une série de services de support et de régulation au sein de l’écosystème global naturel, tel que perçu dans le rapport d’évaluation des écosystèmes pour le Millénaire.
De tels impacts dépendent directement de la localisation géographique où l’activité se déroule. Ainsi, la méthode se concentre d’avantage sur la caractérisation des impacts et leur différenciation sur le plan bio-géographique notamment, en définissant des typologies d’utilisation du sol à évaluer dans des régions présentant des caractéristiques écologiques similaires sur le plan global, tels que les « Holdridge Life Zones ». Cette étape permet non seulement de faire face à la variabilité spatiale entre les données mais considère aussi le type d’utilisation du sol, l’état et la sensibilité de l’écosystème. Ainsi, une analyse de la variabilité des impacts à l’échelle régionale devient possible.

The environmental impacts of residential windows made from aluminum clad wood, PVC and fiberglass were assessed using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The LCA was a case study in which specific-site data were used for the manufacturing stage of each window, while published data were adapted to complete the life cycle inventories using the Sima Pro software. These inventories were grouped into impact categories and scaled based on IMPACT 2002+ v2.1 characterization and damage factors. The damage modeling indicated that the life cycle impacts are dominated by the combustion of nonrenewable energy resources. More than 25% of greenhouse gases were emitted during the manufacturing stage. The PVC life cycle used the most nonrenewable energy and caused the most damage due to that window’s shorter service life. The disposal of aluminum cladding in the municipal waste stream caused greater aquatic ecotoxicity for the wooden window. The sensitivity analysis revealed that replacing the virgin material in aluminum cladding with recycled content improved the life cycle impacts of the wooden window. Using fiberglass or PVC to clad the wood window also improved the environmental performance. Other potential improvements to the life cycle impacts of the three windows include reducing the energy use during manufacturing of windows and improving energy efficiency of manufacturers’ buildings.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a building rating system that is growing in popularity. It is composed of 69 credits, each providing 1 point if “implemented” in the building. However, actual environmental benefits each credits provide do not seem to be always of the same order of magnitude: a higher rating does not necessarily equal more environmental friendliness. In this research, benefits and burdens of LEED have been applied to an actual office building in California, and evaluated using a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. The impacts of this building are dominated by operation and maintenance, which is dominated by energy consumption and employee commuting, whereas water consumption and waste management have small impacts. The credits that provide the most environmental benefits are the one geared toward green power, reducing energy consumption and commuting, and increasing the recycling/reuse of the structure during renovation. Credits related to water efficiency, waste recycling, building footprint reduction, or recycling content in the furniture appear to provide much less benefits. The main difficulties in this assessment included the evaluation of the effectiveness of credits targeting the reduction of employee commuting, and the actual environmental benefits due to reduced land use. Observations indicate that the benefits of LEED credits are not always consistent with the points assigned. We find that some credits have larger benefits than others. As a correction to the existing LEED system, benefits and burdens have been aggregated in one indicator per credit, and a new scale for the LEED points system has been developed to reflect the actual magnitude of the environmental benefits of each credit. It appears that several credits leading to large benefits are in fact not the ones targeted in practice. This miscorrelation needs to be addressed and corrected in the current LEED rating system.

Une nouvelle méthode de caractérisation des émissions des gaz à effet de serre, développé dans le cadre d’un projet de maîtrise, sera aussi présentée.

Biofuels have been effectively introduced in Brazil since 1931 and further 1938, when 5% of ethanol (anhydrous ethyl alcohol) was compulsorily requested on the gasoline respectively imported by and produced within the country. In 1975, in response to the first world fuel crisis, the Brazilian Government launched the National Alcohol Program (PROÁLCOOL), which represented the world biggest biomass program for energetic means. The alcohol production increased from 0.7 million cubic meters in 1975 to 15 million cubic meters in 2004/2005 and historical data points to a reduction around 110 million tons of CO2, due to fuel substitution. Concerning biodiesel, although the first registry on research in Brazil dates back to 1980 – first world patent on biodiesel production, from cotton oil - the National Program on Biodiesel Production and Use has only been launched in 2004. By law, since 2005 the biodiesel became part of Brazilian’s energetic grid mix and its share on the normal diesel has been established as up to 2%, as a voluntary addition from 2005 to 2007, having become mandatory, since 2008. From 2013 on, the biodiesel share will be compulsory, up to 5% - being on the voluntary basis, from 2008 till 2013. Therefore, actual scenarios point to an expressive increase in alternative fuel production – hydrated alcohol, anhydrous ethyl alcohol, biodiesel and HBio diesel - due to global energy and environmental demands and driven by the continuous introduction of flex fuel vehicles. Although mainly economic aims were involved, the occurrence of impacts is clear and has to be assessed in different environmental compartments. The big challenge turns to be the expansion of sugar cane and biomass plantations - such as soya - associated with a sustainable land occupation and transformation. In order to strengthen the Brazilian agricultural area, and to emphasize its increment in terms of environmental aspects, it is essential to highlight the importance of resources conservation (soil, water, air, biodiversity, etc) and social aspects, in comparison to other fossil energy sources. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has been playing a crucial role on the analysis and visualization of such potential impacts resulting from human activities (production, services) on the environment. Land use assessment in LCA – characterization models and indicators, still under research and development - allows the estimation of many impacts resulting from land use occupation and transformation due to biofuel production alternatives and is surely useful on the comparison of fuel alternatives.

À l’ère du greenwashing, il devient difficile pour le consommateur de faire des choix éclairés en matière de produits éco-responsables. Il convient de rappeler qu’il n’existe pas de produit « vert » ou « écologique » dans l’absolu, pas plus qu’il n’existe de produit sans impact sur l’environnement. En fait, chaque étape du cycle de vie d’un produit, de l’obtention des matières premières en passant par sa fabrication, son transport, son emballage, son utilisation et sa fin de vie, consomme inévitablement des ressources et de l’énergie et engendre des émissions de polluants dans l’environnement. Conséquemment, tout ce qu’il est possible d’affirmer, c’est qu’il existe des produits « plus verts » que d’autres, « plus respectueux de l’environnement » ou à moindre impact.

La Chaire ACV s’est engagée à assister RONA dans son ambition de devenir le chef de file dans l’offre de produits à moindre impact sur l’environnement, produits qui seront commercialisés sous la marque RONA ECO et sous l’appellation « éco-responsable ». L’objectif ultime de cette démarche est de promouvoir des modes de production et de consommation plus durables en aidant les consommateurs à faire les meilleurs choix possibles. Pour espérer l’atteinte de cet objectif, il est primordial d’évaluer scientifiquement les différentes alternatives en adoptant une « approche cycle de vie » dont fait partie la méthodologie d’analyse du cycle de vie. Jusqu’à maintenant, la méthodologie de sélection a été appliquée sur plus de 500 produits dans un grand nombre de catégories, dont les produits d’entretien, la quincaillerie, la plomberie, l’électricité et les produits saisonniers.

Parmi les conclusions à tirer de l’expérience, on observe que la procédure de sélection s’est révélée une occasion unique de travailler étroitement avec les fournisseurs pour améliorer les produits offerts. Plusieurs fournisseurs ont été sensibilisés à l’importance de considérer l’aspect environnemental dans le développement de leur produit. De plus, ils ont été encouragés à obtenir des certifications environnementales, à se renseigner auprès de leurs fournisseurs sur l’origine de leurs intrants et à se questionner sur la fin de vie de leurs produits.

La méthodologie de sélection des produits est un processus en mode d’amélioration continue. Les produits RONA ECO actuels doivent être présentés comme des bases de référence pour les prochaines générations. Les critères doivent être en constante évolution pour prendre en compte l’acquisition de nouvelles connaissances sur les produits et les procédés. Ainsi, il sera possible d’offrir des produits toujours plus performants du point de vue environnemental et de stimuler l’innovation chez les fournisseurs.

The environmental performance of nine different consumer products, including bathroom and kitchen cleaning agents, detergents, and soaps was analyzed applying life cycle assessment.
For identifying the contribution of the different life-cycle phases to the overall environmental impact of home-care and personal hygiene products, a comprehensive cradle-to-gate analysis was performed. Life cycle inventories for the manufacturing of the products were established on the basis of first-hand industry data. The use phase was modeled applying data from consumer behavior studies (e.g. data on cleaning frequency, product application amounts, cleaning habits) and information provided on the products’ packaging. The results of the analysis indicate that for most home care and personal hygiene products the main environmental impacts are caused during the use phase. This phase contributes with more than 50 % to the total climate impacts mainly due to high electricity consumption. For laundry detergents, cleaners, and soaps, the consumer can significantly reduce the products’ carbon footprint by choosing low water temperatures for washing and cleaning. The presentation will illustrate the scenario-based LCA modelling approach, highlight the contribution of the different life cycle stages to the overall environmental footprint of consumer products, and discuss the implications for producers, retailers, and consumers.
